NOVEMBER IS DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH!

Eyeguy wants to be friends

Lions Diabetes Awareness Program and the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services are partnering to promote National Diabetes Awareness Month in November and World Diabetes Day
(November 14).

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. It affects an estimated 74.8 million Americans, or one in three adults, of whom 54 million have pre-diabetes, 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, and 6.2 million are undiagnosed and at risk for disabling and life threatening diabetes complications. Worldwide, diabetes currently affects 246 million people and is expected to affect 380 million by 2025. Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of global death by disease. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss in adults of working age (20 – 65 years) in industrialized countries.

LCI established the Diabetes Awareness Program to assist Lions in conducting and supporting local and large-scale efforts leading to the control and treatment of diabetes and its complications through education, prevention and control and research. Lions have worked with community healthcare organizations to provide diabetes screenings, educational programs and funding, camps, and other assistance to people with diabetes.

LCI and NDEP are partnering together to make a difference in diabetes prevention and control and raise the public’s awareness of this growing world epidemic.

Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organization in the world with 1.3 million members in 201 countries and geographic areas. Founded in 1917, Lions are a worldwide network of men and women who meet the needs of their local communities. Known for working together to end preventable blindness, Lions provide many services, such as conducting vision, hearing and health screenings, building parks and hospitals, awarding scholarships, assisting youth, helping in time of disaster and much more. LIONS HOST BREAKFAST WITH SANTA

The Ransomville Lions Club is getting ready for the Lighting of the Wreath Kickoff Breakfast with Santa on November 25, 2007, from 7 am until 11am at the Ransomville Fire Hall on Route 93, in the heart of Ransomville. The breakfast is the kickoff event for Ransomville’s Annual Lighting of the Wreath activities. Schedules will be available of the day’s planned activities.

Santa Claus will make a special appearance during the breakfast to listen to the children’s Christmas wishes and give them each a gift.  The Lions will be hosting a basket raffle, which will be held during the breakfast, along with boxes located for a drop off location for “Christmas for Our Community”. The reason for our basket raffle is simply because November is Diabetes Awareness Month and the money will help people in need, assist the hearing impaired, as well as provide diabetes awareness & education, and develop youth programs within our community. The primary goal of our Christmas for Our Community drive is to deliver a message of hope to needy families and youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.

We will be serving:
  • hot fluffy pancakes
  • fresh scrambled eggs
  • piping hot sausage
  • chilled fruit cup
  • ice cold juice, coffee and tea

Available at a nominal fee of $5 each / children under 5 free.

  • All proceeds to benefit Christmas for Our Community. Any questions about the breakfast or tickets, contact:

Ransomville Lions held their Third Annual Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest at Stevenson’s Elementary School this October. Lions Club President Don Clark said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Stevenson Elementary School. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them.  We are so proud to be able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.” The posters were displayed at the Ransomville Free Library from October 25 to November 8, 2007

Judging of the five posters submitted were conducted on Thursday, November 1, 2007 with the following individuals selected as judges: Priscilla Bailey-Baker, Baker Farms; Lion Pamela Serianni, new member of the Ransomville Lions Club; Nancy Freischlag, First Niagara Bank Branch Manager; and Pamela Parker, Town of Porter Planning Board. Winning posters were announced at a special reception on November 3, 2007, at the Ransomville Free Library.

Out of the five posters, Shannon Coughlin, 11 year old student at Stevenson’s Elementary School, won $75 as her poster was selected for first place in the Peace Poster Contest and she has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist. Sandra Dell’Aria, won $50 for second place, and Austin Hauser won $25 for third in the competition. All five participating students received an award from the Ransomville Lions Club for their visions of peace

Our club is cheering for Shannon as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that his vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” stated Lion Tina Clark, Ransomville Lions Club Peace Poster Chair.

Shannon’s poster will advance to face stiff competition through the district; multiple district and international rounds of competition if she is to be declared the international grand prize winner. One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $2,500, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to New York City for the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations.  The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500. Inkjet & Cell Phone Recycling!

Every Lion should be aware of the universal environment motto:

Reduce the amount of waste discarded, Reuse materials instead of discarding them, and Recycle materials whenever possible.

In 1972, Lions made a commitment to protect the environment. Lions environment chairpersons continue to encourage clubs to implement projects that protect our air, land, and water.  RansomvilleLions Club participates in ink Cartridge Recyling and Cell Phone Recycling! Every year more than 1 billion (1000 million) Inkjet Cartridges are used; most are thrown away. By the end of 2009 the industry is forecasting the usage of ink cartridges exceeding to more than 2 billion (2000 million) Inkjet cartridges worldwide. Estimates indicate there are more than 100 million retired cell phones gathering dust in the United States, with 100 million more added each year. Today only about 5% of these are being properly recycled. Chances are you have one gathering dust in your home.

Don't throw that printer cartridge in the garbage! Deposit it in one of our boxes. We currently have one placed at Rite Aid Pharmacy, just inside the entrance, on their window ledge, right in the heart of Ransomville. Help us recycle these things!
