LIONS NIGHT AT THE RACES!!!

jipp1.jpg

The Ransomville Lions are hosting their 3rd Annual Lions Night at the Races on August 15, 2008, at the Ransomville Speedway, located on Brayley Road, in the hamlet of Ransomville. Last year, there were a limited number of tickets but this year, the tickets are pre-sale only, at the cost of $15 each! The purchase of each ticket includes your grandstand admission, a picnic style dinner under the VIP pavilion, and lots of fun for the evening. Ransomville Lions organize a Chinese Auction which is held under the food pavilion as everyone enjoys their meal, with hopes to win a basket.

Last year, Jipp Ortiz, local race car driver and business owner of Ed’s Garage, donated trophies for the Lions to present to each of the three class feature winners: Street Stock, Sportsman and Modified. Ortiz won the Sportsman race, and presented the trophy to District Governor Ken Buchowski’s daughter.

All proceeds from Lions Night at the Races and the Chinese Auction are to be donated to Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service.  The Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service assists individuals who are legally blind, and can no longer see the television or drive. With a specially equipped radio, broadcasts of their favorite programs, magazines, newspapers, etc. are read by volunteers, all day and every day. This helps these individuals to stay in touch with the progression of their favorite shows, as well as the outside world.

A very enjoyable evening is always enjoyed by all and many who have attended this event look forward to attending year after year. If you are interested in attending, please contact Lion President Don Clark at 791-4628 or Lion Tina Clark at 791-4281.  If you have not attended this event, please be sure to put it on your calendar! It isn’t an event to be missed!

Operation Christmas Child Seminar

It’s a heartbreaking reality. Millions of boys and girls around the globe live in difficult circumstances and are in desperate need of hope. Whether they are slum dwellers in Calcutta or orphans in Johannesburg, children long to know that they are loved. Operation Christmas Child is one way you can make a difference in a young person’s life. Since 1993, this Samaritan’s Purse project has shared the good news of God’s love with hurting children through the simplest of gifts—shoe boxes! Filled with school supplies, toys, and personal items that are packed by caring people, these boxes help introduce children to God as well as the Christmas spirit.

The Ransomville Lions Club invites your family, church, or group to take part in this unique missions project. As you pack a shoe box for a child, please think about that boy or girl who will receive it. Due to the tremendous response last year from people who participated in Operation Christmas Child, more than 7.6 million shoe box gifts were collected worldwide to help share the love of God and the joy of Christmas with hurting boys and girls. Together with the Ransomville Lions Club, you and over 100,000 other dedicated volunteers in the U.S., we know we can accomplish even more this year. Millions of lives will be touched by the shoe box gifts collected this year.

How do you pack a shoe box for Operation Christmas Child? On October 4, 2008, 1 pm – 4 pm, Lion Tina Clark will host a Operation Christmas Child Workshop at the American Legion Post #830, Route 93, Ransomville. Registration is required. For a registration fee of $10, you will receive free shipping, a plastic shoebox for all your items, Operation Christmas Child pamphlet and someone on hand to answer any questions you may have. There will also be available for you an array of Christmas wrap, bows, stickers, and other supplies for you to decorate your box. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child's age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Mark the correct age category on the label, place the appropriate boy/girl label and tape the label to the top of your box. Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child of the selected age group. Place a rubber band around each shoe box and lid and leave the box with the Ransomville Lions Club to take care of shipping.

If you would like to make a shoebox and spread the word so others can/will get involved too, contact Lion Tina Clark at 791-4281or Lion Betty Clark at 791-4628 to register. Or you can or drop your check in the mail, in the amount of $10, made out to Ransomville Lions Club, and send to Ransomville Lions Club, PO Box 128, Ransomville, NY 14131. Please be sure to indicate name of individual attending the workshop.

Pre-registration is strongly suggested to be sure that Lion Tina has enough plastic shoeboxes for all interested. Refreshments will be available during workshop. All shoeboxes will be shipped by early November to have plenty of time to distribute for the Christmas season. You will be amazed to see how a small gift—your gift—can touch a child’s heart!

Inkjet & Cell Phone Recycling!

Every Lion should be aware of the universal environment motto:

Reduce the amount of waste discarded, Reuse materials instead of discarding them, and Recycle materials whenever possible.

In 1972, Lions made a commitment to protect the environment. Lions environment chairpersons continue to encourage clubs to implement projects that protect our air, land, and water.  RansomvilleLions Club participates in ink Cartridge Recyling and Cell Phone Recycling! Every year more than 1 billion (1000 million) Inkjet Cartridges are used; most are thrown away. By the end of 2009 the industry is forecasting the usage of ink cartridges exceeding to more than 2 billion (2000 million) Inkjet cartridges worldwide. Estimates indicate there are more than 100 million retired cell phones gathering dust in the United States, with 100 million more added each year. Today only about 5% of these are being properly recycled. Chances are you have one gathering dust in your home.

Don't throw that printer cartridge in the garbage! Deposit it in one of our boxes. We currently have one placed at Rite Aid Pharmacy, just inside the entrance, on their window ledge, right in the heart of Ransomville. Help us recycle these things!
